Beneath the Lampshade

Relativists

They don’t want it to work this way because our relativistic age has its hidden dogmatisms. They claim to not know, but they are also quite assured that you don’t know either, and that nobody can know. There may or may not be a God, and we can’t know anything about him. But we do know this—if he exists, he is incapable of revealing himself. But how do they know this? They have just said, “We can know nothing of God, and here, let me tell you something about him.”

A Word About Jesus (from C.S. Lewis)

I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come to any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

I think this would benefit my health. I should buy it.

Sugar

Our current food supply is so glutted with fructose, that is added sugar, sugar that was put there very specifically for the food industry’s purposes, both for palatability and for shelf life, that it has now created a toxic - basically a toxic side effect in our livers, driving all of these chronic metabolic diseases. -Dr. R. Lustig

Intimacy (or is it?)

Many times I hear couples describe their sex life using the word “intimacy.” The truth is, it’s a word that’s been taken lightly in the average person’s vocabulary. It’s used to describe a passionate sensation between two people. Sex outside of permanent relationship leads to false intimacy because it allows the people involved to feel a moment of closeness that doesn’t do justice to the reality of what intimacy is. Intimacy is so much more than a passionate feeling—it’s commitment, knowledge and pursuit. It is a lifelong connection between two people who choose to grow closer in love each and every day of their lives. Sex is merely a physical means of expressing that lifelong commitment. It should be the product of true intimacy, rather than the foundation of intimacy. -Debra K. Fileta (Relevant Mag.)

What my college students needed was to mentor high school students & hang out with the singles who had phased from college into the work world & married couples who had learned what kind of person to be & to marry to make a family work. What they did not need was to hang out with the same immature yahoos they spent all of their time playing “pull my finger” with anyway & going to a free event that was like day care for twenty-one-year-old hormonally enraged porn addicts & video-game aficionados trying to stretch junior high into the retirement years.

Science & Christianity (Mutually Beneficial?)

A few brief points on science & its dependency on certain assumed beliefs.

Jumping to Conclusions

Christians can be confident in a discussion on the nature and use of science, precisely because only the Christian worldview can provide the necessary preconditions for the intelligibility of scientific inquiry. Science requires a significant number of philosophical assumptions just to conduct empirical investigation.

Lorna Doone: usually a good decision.

Fact: this is the best kind of mug.

Deep down in the heart of every person is a hidden desire to reinterpret Jesus in light of our own culture, political bent, or favorite theological belief. We do the same thing with hell.

The present is the only time that any duty can performed or any grace received. (This is why Jesus tells us to ask only for our DAILY bread.)

This is how we roll. Love this picture.
